Scenario 1, Part 2 of 3

Dr Balfour:
This lump probably isn’t anything to worry about. We’ll keep checking it if it bothers you. You could have a mammogram if you want to—some guidelines recommend it.

Ms. Morgan:
What will it show you?

Dr. Balfour:
Well, the truth is, it may not show anything. Mammograms have a fairly high false positive rate, especially in women under 40. It’s up to you whether you want it or not.

Ms. Morgan:
What does that mean? Should I have the test or not?

Dr. Balfour:
We can’t always count on the results to be accurate. But it might give us some information. Chances are, we won’t find a problem.
